RESUMEN

The COVID-19 pandemic and associated prevention policies can directly or indirectly alter the sentiment of individuals while registering water pollution complaints, but observational evidence remains limited. Here, we conducted a sentiment analysis on over 10,000 water pollution complaints from residents in Alabama, USA (2012-2021) to better understand how and to what extent COVID-19 has altered emotion (polarity score-based) and attitude (subjectivity) of water pollution complaints. We found that the 2017 state-wise drought significantly increased the percentage of negative water pollution complaints by +35%, with no significant alternation in attitude before the COVID-19 pandemic. Since COVID-19, the percentage of negative and subjective water pollution complaints significantly decreased and increased by -30 and +20%, respectively, and these sentiment alternations were maintained by 2021. This study provides a new direction for environmental governance and management, requiring a timely response to changes in the public's emotions and attitudes during the next climate extremes and pandemics.

Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-COV-2) is a cluster of ß coronaviruses. The 2019 coronavirus disease (COVID-19) caused by SARS-COV-2 is emerging as a global pandemic. Thus, early diagnosis of SARS-COV-2 is essential to prevent severe outbreaks of the disease. In this experiment, a novel label-free photoelectrochemical (PEC) immunosensor was obtained based on silver sulfide (Ag2S) sensitized titanium dioxide@bismuth tungstate (TiO2@Bi2WO6) nanocomposite for quantitative detection of SARS-COV-2 nucleocapsid protein. The constructed TiO2@Bi2WO6 hollow microspheres had large specific surface area and could produce high photocurrent intensity under visible light illumination. Ag2S was in-situ grown on the surface of thioglycolic acid (TGA) modified TiO2@Bi2WO6. In particular, TiO2@Bi2WO6 and Ag2S formed a good energy level match, which could effectively enhance the photocurrent conversion efficiency and strength the photocurrent response. Ascorbic acid (AA) acted as an effective electron donor to effectively eliminate photogenerated holes. Under optimal experimental conditions, the constructed immunosensor presented a supersensitive response to SARS-COV-2 nucleocapsid protein, with a desirable linear relationship ranged from 0.001 to 50 ng/mL for nucleocapsid protein and a lower detection limit of 0.38 pg/mL. The fabricated sensor exhibited a wide linear range, excellent selectivity, specificity and stability, which provided a valuable referential idea for the detection of SARS-COV-2.

In December 2019, the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic attacked Wuhan, China. The city government soon strictly locked down the city, implemented a hierarchical diagnosis and treatment system, and took a series of unprecedented pharmaceutical and non-pharmaceutical measures. The residents’ access to the medical resources and the consequently potential demand–supply tension may determine effective diagnosis and treatment, for which travel distance and time are key indicators. Using the Application Programming Interface (API) of Baidu Map, we estimated the travel distance and time from communities to the medical facilities capable of treating COVID-19 patients, and we identified the service areas of those facilities as well. The results showed significant differences in service areas and potential loading across medical facilities. The accessibility of medical facilities in the peripheral areas was inferior to those in the central areas;there was spatial inequality of medical resources within and across districts;the amount of community healthcare centers was insufficient;some communities were underserved regarding walking distance;some medical facilities could be potentially overloaded. This study provides reference, in the context of Wuhan, for understanding the spatial aspect of medical resources and residents’ relevant mobility under the emergency regulation, and re-examining the coordination of emergency to improve future planning and utilization of medical facilities at various levels. The approach can facilitate policymakers to assess potential loading of medical facilities, identify low-accessibility areas, and deploy new medical facilities. It also implies that the accessibility analysis can be rapid and relevant even only with open-source data.
